Teardown notes
The one-liner
A Japanese speaking club where upper beginners finally practise real conversations at their own level.
What they actually sell
Japanese Speaking Buddies, run by Ryu Yamada, lives on Skool. Its public pitch: "Japanese Speaking Club for upper-beginners." A free tier sits at the front door, with Premium and VIP upgrades whose prices are not shown on the public page. The page names the gap many learners feel, knowing grammar and vocabulary but freezing when it is time to speak, and paints the goal as answering naturally, catching an anime joke before the subtitles and messaging a Japanese friend without overthinking. Inside sit 19 courses and a dense module library. A formal money-back promise is not spelled out on the about page.
Who pays and why
Upper-beginner Japanese learners who know grammar but stall in real conversation. The frustration is years of apps and still no spoken Japanese. They join for structured speaking practice with others at the same level.
Where the members come from
The Skool lander and Ryu Yamada's own teaching appear to be the main acquisition path. Public social links are thin on the about page, so growth reads as community-led rather than a giant media brand. Exact follower counts stay off the about page.
What's holding it back
Speaking clubs need enough members at each level online at once. Thin numbers make sessions hard to fill.
Steal this
Group learners tightly by level so every conversation feels safe and useful.
Would this work in another niche?
Yes for any language with a speaking gap. Weak for skills with no live practice element.
